In Her Own

Juliana Speaks
Her Thoughts

When I first became obsessed with skateboarding,I was determined to learn the most basic of all tricks, the ollie.Once I had mastered the ollie on my skateboard, and only once I had(It took me 3 months),I ventured into town to skate with the local crew of guys and we got along well. Its tough being a girl skater.People tend to criticize me,but I don`t care.Let them say, what they want to say but what really pissed me off is that people look down on girl skaters that is the most sickest thing. We are now in the 21st century what men can do women can do it too.Just want to skate and that all.Guy skaters whom I skate with are really helpful (Yishun Income Skate Crew)They taught me the right way of performing tricks and it really helps a new struggling new skater like me.What I`m trying to say is that it is best to learn to skateboard on your own, free from criticism that so often taunts infant girl skateboaders. Then you are able to skateboard reasonably, you can venture outwards and make a great first impression.Don`t be a backstabber.

I have seen a lot of change since the fish deck days till now the new hotdog deck, where tiny wheels and baggy pants to side rails are coming back in the skateboarding scene, but one thing that really outshine the skating community is the presence of the Girl Skaters where they do take their own fair share of fall and spained ankles to scrapping flesh and crashing of bone and sinew.I do give them the respect of a fellow skater in the society.Being a female in a traditionally male-dominated sport such as skateboarding is not easy.It takes practice and determination to earn the respect of male skaters. It has taken many years, centuries even, for women to be treated as equals.Women can now vote and they have the same rights as men, as they should. However, in certain aspects of the modern world, girls are still being left behind. One of those areas is sports.More specifically, skateboarding. These days the number of girls who skateboard is increasing. Now there are professional girlskateboaders like Elissa Steamer and Cara-Beth Burnside.Locally some of the aspiring girl skaters are following their footsteps....
